      David Webb (1925-1975), the well-known New York goldsmith and designer, unmistakable icon of contemporary American and World jewellery, is justifiably included among the outstanding protagonists of the “Important Jewels” autumn auction of Sotheby’s New York. Sophisticated, eccentric, flashy and original, Webb’s jewels are the unrepeatable emblem of a typically American and modern style, continuously projected to the future, with the use of geometric overlapping, bold use of colour and constant and passionate inspiration of the animal world. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he trains in a local jewellery store belonging to his paternal uncle before moving to New York, where he is immediately attracted by the city’s pace of life and all it has to offer.
