THE NATURAL DIAMOND
more unique than rare
with a mining production of 10 million carats; Botswana, with a mining production of 7 million carats; Zimbabwe, with a mining production of 4 million carats. The principal companies which operate in the field of mining and marketing diamonds include: De Beers, present in 25 countries around the world, Alrosa, a Russian company which is responsible for 25% of world diamond mining, Rio Tinto Group, the third mining company, BHP Billiton, an Anglo-Australian company and one of the most important in the world. Today, due to the cessation of volcanic activity for millions of years, the diamonds which have remained on the earth have become increasingly rare. In the last 140 years, 7,000 kimberlite pipes have been sampled, 1,000 of these effectively contain diamonds; however, only 60 are economically sustainable. And of these 60, only 7 mines, including those of Jwaneng, Orapa and Venetia of the De Beers group, are owners of most of the world’s diamonds.
