 monochromatic category of gems, in which the elements of colouration are connected to the crystalline structure of the mineral, in this specific case iron, equal to 10% of its total mass. Though the colour of peridot derives essentially from iron, other elements such as chromium or nickel make the colour of these gemstones, belonging to the family of silicates, even more intense. And so, the green is not just green, but presents itself in all variations, from a brilliant yellow-green to a bright grass green to a bottle green or to apple green. Though peridot is usually a very transparent gem, specimens are often found with cat’s eye (chatoyancy) or with asterisk (asterism), effects which the reflection of a ray of visible light produce on the surface of the gem, due to needle-like inclusions.
