conditions to attract major investments and, consequently, increase the number of diamond cutting factories in Angola, will continue to be one of the key goals of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas (MIREMPET).
According to the minister in charge, Diamantino Azevedo, this challenge also passes from the continuous support to producers, with the goal of increasing diamond production, to accelerate the birth of
new projects and increase the ability of polishing
this mineral. Speaking during the New Year greeting ceremony, the government official reiterated the need to continue to improve the business climate of the Country, to attract more investors and increase the ability to prospect and explore the mineral resources sustainably. Parallel to diamond production, the minister also assured producers support to increase the production of gold and ferrous metals and launch projects on copper, as well as guarantee the use of non-metallic mineral resources, namely
phosphate and potassium, to produce fertilizers
and lime for the correction of soil.
MIREMPET data indicate that 70% of the national territory (approx. 872,392 square kilometres) offers exploitable mining potential, which makes room for greater investments in the sector. Among the existing minerals stand out diamonds, copper, iron, silver, manganese, gold, limestone, marble and granite, natural resources that have been discovered with the implementation of the National Geological Plan (PLANAGEO), which aims, among other objectives, at relaunching and increasing the tax contribution of this subsector in Angola.
This Plan provides for a global investment
of 405 million dollars
and foresees the improvement of the knowledge of geology and potential of mineral resources in the national territory, with the goal of guaranteeing the sustainable development of the Country.
With PLANAGEO, the goal is also to attract more global
mining and exploration companies, like De Beers, which have returned to Angola to start the work of prospecting and, subsequently, start exploration in Angola.
A 1-BILLION-DOLLAR EXPENSE FOR BOTSWANA MINE
The world diamond giant De Beers has declared that it will go ahead with
a 1-billion-dollar investment to lengthen the life of its leading mine of Jwaneng
in Botswana, even if the reduction in demand
of gems of last year continues. The Anglo- American opens a new tabulation unit and the government of Botswana, who jointly owns the Debswana Diamond Company, has approved
the expense which will convert the mine of Jwaneng into an underground operation.
In 2018, Debswana declared to have planned an investment, to extend the duration of the mine by 11 years starting from 2024.
De Beers has declared that the expense is necessary because it expects that the long-term supply of rough diamonds will decrease.
