Gli esemplari esposti nella mostra “Tesori d’ambra nel Mar Baltico” sono stati assemblati nel corso di circa 20 anni: attraverso i secoli XVI, XVII e XVIII l’ambra esprime tutto il suo fascino in un’ampia varietà di oggetti, sottoforma di sculture, cofanetti, boccali e tavoli da gioco. Fin dall’epoca romana l’ambra destò l’interesse delle popolazioni civilizzate per il suo valore intrinseco e per le sue favoleggiate origini: le inclusioni occasionali di insetti e piccoli animali intrappolati al suo interno, ne fecero un simbolo di immortalità. Plinio il Vecchio fu il primo a svelarne la provenienza dalla resina vegetale, ma fu solo nel 1757 che lo scienziato russo Mikhail Lomonossov ne determinò la vera origine di resina fossile, da foreste preistoriche risalenti a circa 30-40 milioni di anni.
The specimens showcased in “Amber treasures from the Baltic Sea” have been assembled over a period of 20 years: through the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries amber expresses all its charm in a wide variety of objects, in the form of sculptures, caskets, tankards, and board games. Since Roman times, amber has aroused the interest of civilised populations for its intrinsic value and fantastic origins: the occasional inclusions of insects and small animals trapped inside, made it a symbol of immortality. Pliny the Elder, was the first to unveil its origin from plant resin, but it was only in 1757 that the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonossov determined its true origin of fossil resin, from prehistoric forests dating back to 30 - 40 million years ago.

“L’anno Mille” è un interessante viaggio nel tempo nei Paesi Bassi, attraverso la metà del Medioevo: il periodo degli anni 900 - 1100. Il percorso narrativo si snoda nei villaggi dell’epoca, si ferma alla residenza imperiale di Nijmegen e visita la cattedrale di Utrecht e i tesori di Maastricht, non trascurando anche le città di Bisanzio e di Roma di mille anni fa. Vengono presentati in mostra più di quattrocento oggetti provenienti da tutti i Paesi Bassi, inclusi quasi tutti i reperti archeologici importanti del periodo medievale. Tra gli esemplari più notevoli figurano un corno potabile vichingo della Basilica di Nostra Signora a Maastricht e i famosi Vangeli di Egmond della Biblioteca reale dei Paesi Bassi, oltre a spade, legnami di navi, gioielli d'oro, incluso il recente tesoro di Hoogwoud.
“The Year 1000” is an interesting journey through time in the Netherlands, during the Early Middle Ages: the period between 900 and 1100. The narrative route meanders through the villages of the time, stops at the Imperial Residence of Nijmegen and visits the cathedral of Utrecht and the treasures of Maastricht, without neglecting the cities of Bisanzio and Rome of one thousand years ago. More than four hundred objects from the Netherlands are on show, including almost all the important archaeological finds of the medieval period. The most significant specimens include a Viking drinking horn of the Basilica of Our Lady in Maastricht and the famous Egmond Gospels of the Royal Library of the Netherlands, besides swords, ship timber, gold jewellery, including the recent Hoogwoud treasure.
