Intelligence, a source close to Endiama has confirmed that the two parties are negotiating the exit of Alrosa. No agreement
has been reached, nor is there any news on new shareholders. There are
two potential drivers behind the decision of Alrosa to withdraw. A fall in international demand has had a strong impact on the sector of Angolan diamonds due to poor traceability.
The CEO of Endiama, José Manuel Augusto Ganga Júnior, had revealed in August that the fall in diamond prices had driven some entities of the group to withdraw their production from the market. They want to wait until the prices rise again. The American sanctions have had a negative impact on Alrosa, something which its directors find difficult to admit, and largely explain the behaviour of the group. The United States alone represent half of the global demand, 90 billion dollars. Furthermore, the Russian company cannot conduct transactions in dollars and has still found no solution for transferring 185 million dollars of dividends.
The director of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Hydrocarbons’ Exchange
Office, Luís António, has been trying to resolve the issue since April. Alrosa has been the key diamond partner of Angola since the 1990s. It is one of the key global players, with 27% of global production and 95% of Russian production.
