   Cocktail Rings
         accessed via a password between tastes of liqueurs and prohibited fun in total secrecy. During those parties which became legend, in the coded language of illegal drinkers, the drinks were ordered by attracting the attention of the barman by raising and elegantly moving the right hand, the one where the magnificent cocktail ring sparkled. The controversial and tormented age of prohibition is well represented by a famous literary work, “The Great Gatsby” (1925), in which Francis Scott Fitzgerald writes about an America still unaware of the Wall Street crisis, made of dreams of riches and hopes, alcohol smugglers and flappers. It is in those mythical 1920s that extra-large, showy and sparkling cocktail rings of gemstones of significant carat weight become the favourite rings of rich ladies and movie stars. The actress Mae West, muse of Salvador Dalì and sex symbol, adored them studded with diamonds. Greta Garbo wore them from the time of Mati Hari, the film of 1931, directed by George Fitzmaurice, in which she wore the jewels of the famous spy-dancer.
