The colours of quartz
of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Consequently, according to the geological zone of formation, the mineral presents different mineralogical and chemical characteristics and a crystalline structure which is typologically different. The colours of quartz take on a large variety of nuances depending on the degree of purity of the mineral; it is called transparent and colourless in case of absence of impurities; while in the presence of impurities, defects or inclusions of other rocks and minerals, the colours can change, giving way to the varieties of carnelian, amethyst, green quartz, jasper, citrine quartz, chrysoprase. The most widely used gems, especially in the field of jewels, include amethyst, which owes its purple colour to the presence of iron in its crystal lattice; pink quartz, the stone most widely used in crystal therapy, of more or less intense pink, from opaque to vitreous to transparent, always with a great sheen; citrine quartz of variable colour, from yellow to red to orange, due to the presence of trivalent iron; the hyaline quartz (rock crystal), pure, colourless and perfectly transparent; green quartz (chrysoprase), variety of chalcedony, of an apple green colour, due to inclusions of nickel; smoky quartz, from brown to grey to black, due to natural and artificial radiations, and to inclusions of aluminium and rutile; rutilated quartz, contains rutile crystals, iron oxide in needle shape, of red, gold, silver or green.
